How to Get Clear on Your Vision and Stop Chasing Rabbits

July 5, 2018 By Susan Scharpegge

“The man who chases two rabbits catches neither.” ~ Confucius
Introduced to me by my leadership coach, this Chinese Proverb was offered to bring me to a place of self-awareness. I was in a coaching session and was tossing out my business ideas at the rapid pace of one of those fancy bubble machines. Thousands of tiny bubbles aimlessly drifting into the atmosphere. A beautiful image at the moment, but one that quickly evaporates when trying to achieve higher elevations.

While I am quite certain that my coach used the quote verbatim, my takeaway was “a woman who chases four rabbits gets zero.” Not a great business value-proposition and a further validation that I desperately needed direction.

You see, at the time I was in the depths of transitioning from a corporate senior management role to the CEO (Conquer. Every. Obstacle.) of my own business. The metaphor made perfect sense to me as I was trying to “be” many things and “do” many tasks at once. My energy was all over the map and I was feeling more like the rabbit trying to outrace the hunter. For the record, I use this story only for the purpose of expressing the truth based common sense of the experience, in essence, to make a point. In real time and space, I don’t hunt and I would never consider catching a rabbit!

The point that I am making here is that it takes clarity, commitment and focus to create our vision and reach out goals. If you are (like I was) feeling overburdened with too many important tasks at hand. and no sense of accomplishment, you may be chasing two, three, or even four rabbits!

This is where leadership coaching can have a significant impact on helping you find clarity, define your vision and set your goals. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. What am I trying to achieve?
2. Why is it important to me?
3. What have I done so far?
4. What has worked? What has not worked?
5. What is my plan to move forward?

One of the most powerful outcomes of leadership coaching or any other coaching for that matter is the ability to get very clear about what we want. It helps us establish our thoughts and words into what is really important. It creates a safe space to explore our narratives and it all starts with a coaching conversation.

A coaching conversation is different from other conversations in that it has direction and focus. As your coach, I use descriptive language to help you gain clarity. I offer observations, feedback, and help you gain self-awareness to help you entertain new thought patterns to evoke new possibilities.

If you can relate to this story and are curious about leadership coaching, contact me and we can discuss a coaching plan that works for you!
