Yoga postures have always felt natural to me. As a child, I would sit in lotus for hours making up stories of the swirling clouds overhead while the neighborhood kids played baseball in the nearby field. I had no clue that I was doing yoga, I just knew intuitively that being grounded fed my creativity and gifted me the tools to cope with my everyday life.
Like most of us, adulthood bought many external demands and as the demands grew so did my stress levels. At first, the stress ignited my ambition and helped me climb the so-called corporate ladder. In many ways ‘being busy’ kept me in crisis and it gave me a sense of identity. As a single mom with a demanding manager job, there was always a plethora of daily issues that kept my adrenaline at peak and eventually my ‘monkey mind’ was running the show. As a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie; or what I now refer to as an addiction to drama, I was always in a state of “fight or flight.” After a few decades, it all caught up with me and in the winter of 2013, I crashed. My tank was empty and long gone were the days of sitting in a field watching the formation of clouds. I had lost my ground. A saliva test confirmed that I was in stage 3 of adrenal fatigue. My health practitioner suggested mild exercise to start my energy flow.
Exercise – yoga, in particular – can help to improve quality of life and reduce stress responses. I found my way to my yoga mat and started to experience significant changes in my quality of life. Slowly my mind, body, and soul started to align. I started to live an intentional life. For me, yoga is a journey, not a destination. The physical work on my yoga mat is but a glimpse of my practice. My yoga mat reminds me of an iceberg, where you only see one-tenth of its majestic beauty. The real beauty is the transference of my thoughts, words, and actions. After I witnessed my personal transformation, I felt a strong calling to share it with others.
In 2015 I completed my Yoga Teacher Training. I offer classes in my home studio, at Body Solace Studio, and to a dedicated group of Yogi’s in Old Barns, Nova Scotia. I also offer private classes where I customize and theme the class based on the needs of my client.
